It was a frustrating first half for the Roots. Heartland applied consistent pressure and were rewarded in the cruelest of fashions — scoring in the 45th minute, with just one minute of stoppage time remaining before the break. The sucker-punch goal sent the teams into halftime at 1–0, leaving the Roots with work to do.

The response in the second half was immediate. With 29 minutes and 45 seconds remaining, Hank O’Leary stepped up and leveled the match — 1–1 — silencing the home crowd and swinging the momentum firmly in the Roots’ direction.

Then came the goal of the match. With less than 13 minutes to play, keeper Ronan Murphy launched a long throw from his own area, triggering a half-field breakaway. Ephraim Lunganga controlled it with a composed first touch, left the defenders in his wake, and coolly slotted a far-post finish past the keeper to make it 2–1 Roots. A clinical, match-defining moment that had the away side dreaming of three points.

But the game had one more twist. With under three minutes of regulation remaining, players from both sides tangled in the box. The referee pointed to the spot — a penalty for Heartland. They converted, and just like that, it was 2–2. A gut punch heading into stoppage time, but the Roots locked in, defended well through the added minutes, and saw the match out without conceding again.

After dropping three points on the road in match one, this group refused to let it happen again. A point earned the hard way — and a mentality worth building on.
